All Hail the Diaper Shrine!

Well, as Annie and I are preparing for the twins to come, we decided to get some shopping done. We bought car seats, baby carriers, diapers, a cow humidifier, and some other junk. However, as the stuff piled up on our floor, we decided to compare belly sizes! I won...

I figured that by comparing belly sizes, Annie wouldn't feel so bad =D What I wonderful husband I am.
Anyhow, the picture below is the pile of stuff we bought (the other car seat is being shipped).

Then we got the brilliant idea of how to store the baby gear in our limited apartment!

We built a baby/diaper shrine!! It was pretty funny building it but when it was all said and done, I had to admit it looked pretty cool.

The next thing we will have to do is explain the shrine to our home teachers without freaking them out =D

A Cowboy's Prayer

Jake, the rancher, went one day to fix a distant fence.
The wind was cold and gusty and the clouds rolled, gray and dense.
As he pounded the last staples in and gathered tools to go,
The temperature had fallen and the snow began to blow.
When he finally reached his pickup, he felt a heavy heart,
From the sound of that ignition, he knew it wouldn't start.

So Jake did what most of us would do, if we'd have been there.
He humbly bowed his balding head and sent aloft a prayer.
As he turned the key for the last time, he softly cursed his luck.
They found him three days later, frozen stiff in that old truck.

Now Jake had been around in life, and done his share of roamin'.
But when he saw Heaven, he was shocked-it looked just like Wyomin'.
Of all the saints in Heaven, his favorite was St. Peter.
[Now, this line, it ain't needed but it helps with rhyme and meter.]

So they set and talked a spell or two, or maybe it was three,
Nobody was keepin' score---in Heaven time is free.
"I've always heard," Jake said to Pete, "that God will answer prayer,
But one time I asked for help, and, well He just plain wasn't there.

Does God answer prayers of some, and ignores the prayers of others?
That don't seem exactly square-I know all men are brothers.
Or does he randomly reply, without good rhyme or reason?
Maybe, it's the time of day, the weather or the season.
Now I just ain't trying to act smart, it's just the way I feel,
And I was wonderin', could you tell me-what the heck's the deal?"

Peter listened very patiently and when Jake was done,
There were smiles of recognition, and he said, "So, you're the one!
That day your truck wouldn't start, and you sent your prayer a flying,
You gave us all a real bad time, with hundreds of us a trying.

A thousand angels rushed to check the status of your file,
But you know,Jake - - - we hadn't heard from you in quite a while.
And though all prayers are answered, and God ain't got no quota,
He didn't recognize your voice, and started a truck in South Dakota.

.. So remember to keep in touch

The first trimester!

The Beginning
It was all Annie's fault!! OK, under her wonderful scrutiny I am telling the story. It all began the week we got back from our honeymoon. We attended my old singles ward because we didn't know where or what time our married ward met. Well, the 2nd counselor has a year-old son and during Sacrament, the baby was in the row in front of Annie and I. Well, during the meeting we both felt impressed that we should not wait the 6 months we were planning on and to go ahead and have children. We tossed the idea back and forth for about two weeks before deciding to go ahead and act accordingly.
I made Annie take two pregnancy tests AND go to the doctor cause I didn't believe it

Well, sure enough Annie was pregnant and we were pretty excited! So after a few weeks of puking and being sick, we got to go to the doctor for our first appointment on the 17th of February. Well, by now I had mentally, financially, and emotionally prepared as much as I could, for having a child.
Go figure.
So we began our first ultrasound and I have seen enough aliens to know what one looks like. Well after seeing the baby I began to mentally zone out. That is until the nurse lady states, "Well, there is baby A and here is baby B!" You can imagine how quickly my brain came back into focus and I asked, "Excuse me??" Sure enough, TWINS!
This is baby A!
This is baby B!
Annie thought the girl was joking (because Annie hadn't been paying attention to the screen) until she looked at me and saw that I had gone pale white. Then Annie was like, "What??" Twins. Once it soaked in for Annie (about 2 minutes) she was soo excited. It took me a bit longer as you can imagine. The doctors kept offering a juice drink 'cause they thought I was going to pass out.
Well time moves on and more sickness and puking and here we are at 12 weeks!
This is Annie at 12 weeks!!
We will be sure to keep ya'll informed. We have another appointment this Thursday, March 17, 2011. We will see what happens!!

Flashback Friday: Eggless eggnog?

This story came up came up last weekend while talking to my younger brother. I was surprised he had never heard it before, as it was one of the finer moments for my younger self and proves that I have always been a cooking goddess.

And so, I have come forth to record it for all to see, and bow before my cooking prowess... or not.

I can't recall exactly how old we were, perhaps 10 and 11 or so?  But it was Christmas time when my older sister Jenny, and I decided to take matters into our own hands.

(This picture has absolutely nothing to do with this story. We were merely trying to save all the "wild flowers" (aka weeds) from death by lawn mower. Cause we had big hearts like that. I'm sure my mom appreciated the giant bouquet we made.)

We really, really wanted eggnog. When you grow up in a house where sweet things were rare, you learned to improvise... a lot.

I would spend an hour tackling the lid on the five gallon bucket of raw honey, as it was quite often the only sweet thing in the house, just to be able to slip my spoon in under the corner I barely managed to pry up.

But that was before I learned where my dad hid his candy stash... errr, not that I ever swiped anything dad... honest! Mostly... *cough* anyway.

I digress.

As there was no eggnog to be found in the house, we decided to make some, because we were cooking geniuses.

We dug up a recipe for eggnog and immediately headed for the kitchen.

"6 eggs" were the very first items on the ingredient list.

Jenny and I looked at each other. Having always been warned of the evils of raw eggs and knowing full well that one never just ate them let alone drank them, we set about hard boiling six eggs.

While that was cooking, we mixed all the other ingredients together and had some nice, sweet, cinnamony flavored milk. All we needed was the eggs.

After all, it is called "egg"nog, right?

Once the eggs had finished cooking, we peeled off the shells. That's when we suddenly realized that there was something odd about this recipe.

"Umm, how do you think they mash up the eggs so well there aren't any chunks?"

"I don't know! But let's try."

Getting out the eggs masher and taking turns, we mashed, and mashed, and mashed, and mashed, and mashed some more, trying to make them all "creamy". But all we got was a bowl full of dry, crumbly eggs.

Finally frustrated, we decided that we should just add the eggs to the wet ingredients and blend them. Perhaps then they would creamify! (cause creamify is a cool word)

But alas, to our great disappointment, all we got was chunky milk.

Finally deciding that whoever wrote the recipe was a total idiot, or had some fancy mashing machine, we strained out the eggs and drank the milk.

Yes, you read that right.

And so, my sister and I continued to make egg less eggnog for many a special occasion, and sometimes even went to far as to share with our siblings.

(picture taken before my youngest brother was born)

We always wondered how the store bought eggnog makers managed to mash their eggs up enough so they were creamy enough to drink.

To this day, it remains a unsolved mystery.
